Let’s talk about water-soluble fertilizers

Water-soluble fertilizers can be dissolved in water and added to the soil quickly. Water-soluble fertilizers make it easy to control the precise amount of nutrients available to your plants. Water-soluble fertilizer makes it easier to manage and more exact because it is a soilless mix.

Soluble fertilizers usually have N-P-K numbers on their label, but remember that the numbers listed are not always the exact percentages. They indicate the smallest percentage of the elements that the fertilizer contains. It is very common for companies to do this because they do not want their competitors to know the exact amount of nutrients in their products. Therefore they list the lowest levels their product might contain to deter any copying of their mixture’s compounds. The N is for nitrogen, the P is for phosphorus, and the K is for potassium or potash. N-P-K are the three known elements necessary for plant life. All three of these elements play an important role in the growth of a plant and are always listed on water soluble fertilizers. Following N-P-K, calcium(Ca) and magnesium(Mg) is the second most important nutrient listed on the label. The rest, iron(Fe), sulfur(S), manganese(Mn), boron(B), molybdenum(Mb), zinc(Zn) and copper(Cu) are trace elements or micro-nutrients.

Nitrogen is the most important of the nutrients because it controls the processes used to make proteins which is vital for new cell growth. Nitrogen is a key player in the production of chlorophyll and is responsible for leaf growth, as well as overall health of the plant.

Phosphorus is necessary for photosynthesis and provides the pathway for energy transfer within the plant. Phosphorus is associated with overall health of the plant and is used in every stage of growth.

Potassium provides the production of sugars and starches, as well as, cell growth. It also increases chlorophyll levels and helps regulate the plants use of light and air. Making this nutrient important in all stages of plant growth.

Magnesium is essential to the absorption of light. It aids in the plant’s use of nutrients and also neutralizes soil acids and toxic compounds produced by the plant. Calcium, is also responsible for the manufacturing of cells and overall growth.

The ultimate goal of fertilizing is to provide your plant with the right amount of nutrients. Water-soluble fertilizers are a great way to provide your crops with the nutrients they need and prevent growers from over-fertilizing the plant which as you know can be detrimental to its overall health and growth.

Once a plant is placed into a container, with new potting soil or other media, the plant will have enough nutrients to last about a month and will then need to be fertilized for continued growth.

With a regular watering/fertilization system and routine, your plants can reach epic harvests. The professionals here at Guerilla Grow Hydroponics are here to help you. We’ve picked a few of our favorite fertilizer brands guaranteed to get the job done.
