LED or HPS, which lighting system is the best for your grow?

Growing cannabis with LED is becoming the mainstream alternative to HPS.

Although LED lighting is still higher than an HPS, the ongoing running costs are lower. LED produces less heat than HPS which of course affects different aspects of plant maintenance and how you design your grow room.

Here are 3 things to keep in mind when growing with LED lighting systems Vs. HPS

  1. Growroom heat levels are completely different with LED lighting. A high quality LED light such as the HLG 650R Commercial Indoor Horticulture LED will only produce half the heat of an HPS system. This is ideal for growers that want a simplification of the grow room. Cannabis growers need to find that perfect room temperature, and grow rooms typically run 3 or 4ºC above the optimum point. Because LED grow rooms run naturally at a cooler temperature. Growing cannabis with LED is becoming VERY popular among the growers looking to save energy.
  2. Because LED lights produce less heat than a HPS light means the leaves of a cannabis plant generally transpire (evaporate) less moisture. These transpiration differences mean that Calcium and Magnesium ions can be less mobile under LED and this may cause deficiencies that you will have to correct with nutrient additions.
  3. LED power levels have been increasing significantly over recent years, now the best LEDs convert over 50% of electrical energy into light. One thing you do not want is to bleach the plants where they look white instead of green because your LED lights are too close to your plants.
